You need a hi-fi VCR for L/R in/outs, but most all VCRs at the end of days, were hi-fi. The lay man explanation would be that if you don't add video and just record audio the entirety of the tape surface is audio instead of it being recorded along the top and bottom edge of the tape (the middle bit is video). There were promo VCR tapes that stereo shops would use to show off speakers and what have you.
